Former Abia Assembly Speaker Chinedum Orji is seeking the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency seat in 2027
Former Abia Assembly Speaker and APC candidate says the 2027 contest should be decided by track record, legislative experience and capacity to attract development.

Former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, has declared his determination to reclaim the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 election, saying his record in public office will be central to his campaign.
Orji, who is the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the constituency, made the declaration in Umuahia after receiving an endorsement at the Ikwuano/Umuahia Women Leaders Summit, according to a statement on the event.
The constituency comprises Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Local Government Areas.
The 2027 contest will be a return to a seat Orji unsuccessfully sought in 2023. In the February 25, 2023 House of Representatives election, Labour Party candidate Hon. Obi Aguocha defeated Orji, who contested on the platform of the People Democratic Party (PDP).
Aguocha polled 48,199 votes, while Orji recorded 35,196 votes, according to the result announced by the returning officer.
Orji subsequently challenged the result at the National Election Petition Tribunal in Umuahia, but the tribunal dismissed his petition in September 2023, leaving Aguocha’s victory intact.

Why Orji believes his record matters
Speaking after the women’s summit, Orji argued that the 2027 election should focus on candidates’ demonstrable records, legislative experience and ability to secure development for the constituency.
According to him, his experience as Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly gives him an understanding of the legislative process, governance and the lobbying required to attract projects and interventions.
“Having had the privilege of leading the state legislature, I understand the mechanics of governance, lobbying, and attracted development.”
Orji said his decision to return to the race was driven by what he described as a desire to provide effective, accessible and impact-oriented representation at the federal level.
His campaign platform similarly identifies federal infrastructure, constituency access, youth empowerment, education and healthcare among its proposed priorities if elected.
‘Let voters examine the records’
The former Speaker also urged voters across Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South to assess candidates based on their previous accomplishments and demonstrated capacity rather than political sentiment.
He said his campaign would focus on issues and socio-economic development, rather than personal attacks.
Orji’s campaign has previously described its 2027 approach as one centred on “facts, truth, transparency, and accountability,” while promising to pursue federal projects and constituency interventions through the National Assembly.
The APC candidate has also outlined plans for a functional constituency office, regular town-hall meetings, transparent reporting, federal infrastructure projects and programmes targeting young people and businesses.
A rematch with Aguocha
The political significance of Orji’s declaration is heightened by the fact that Aguocha’s 2023 victory ended Orji’s attempt to move from the state legislature to the National Assembly.
The 2023 result was one of the notable electoral shifts in Abia during that election cycle, with Aguocha defeating the then-serving Speaker by more than 13,000 votes.
With Orji now seeking the seat on the APC platform, the 2027 race is set to bring the former Speaker and the incumbent lawmaker into another contest for the same federal constituency.
For Orji, however, the central message of his campaign is that voters should judge his candidacy against his previous legislative record and the development agenda he is now presenting for the constituency.
Whether that argument translates into electoral support will ultimately be determined by voters in Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South at the 2027 election.
