Governor Alex Otti flags off the 2026 Abia Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta with the lighting of the Torch of Unity

ABIA STATE: Abia Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta 2026 has officially commenced, with Governor Alex Otti lighting the Torch of Unity at the Government House in Umuahia. But beyond the opening ceremony, what does the competition mean for students, emerging athletes and the future of sports development in Abia State?
Otti performed the ceremony on Monday, October 19, 2026, at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, where he received the torch and urged participating institutions to uphold the rules of competition.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting sports development in Abia State.
According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the fiesta is designed to bring together students from public and private tertiary institutions, including federal and state-owned schools, to promote unity, healthy competition, sportsmanship and youth development.
The Torch of Unity is expected to travel across participating institutions, spreading the message of togetherness and encouraging students to take part in sporting activities.
Abia Sports Fiesta to Promote Unity Among Tertiary Institutions
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Eme Uche, expressed satisfaction that the initiative had become a reality after months of preparation.
She disclosed that planning for the fiesta began in January and recalled that the inaugural edition, held in 2025, recorded significant success.
Uche described Abia as a pioneer in organising a tertiary education sports fiesta of this nature, adding that the initiative had attracted interest from commissioners in other states who wanted to understand how the programme was developed and funded.
She attributed the programme’s progress to Governor Otti’s commitment to education and sports development.
According to the commissioner, the fiesta represents a deliberate effort to move beyond treating sports merely as a curricular activity and instead recognise its broader value in promoting discipline, discovering talent, encouraging social interaction and strengthening cooperation among institutions.
She particularly commended the governor for including private tertiary institutions alongside public institutions and providing grants to support their participation.
Uche said the inclusive approach had created opportunities for institutions that previously had limited access to organised sporting competitions to participate on equal terms.
She assured the governor that participating institutions would remain committed to the initiative’s objectives and expressed confidence that the competition would help students discover and develop their sporting abilities.

Sports Fiesta to Identify Talented Abia Athletes
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, also praised the governor for his leadership and support for sports development.
Ananaba described the Torch of Unity as a symbol of togetherness, strength and youth empowerment.
He said the fiesta would provide a platform for identifying talented athletes who could go on to represent Abia State in state and national competitions.
He added that the championship would strengthen relationships among students from different institutions while encouraging young people to embrace sports as a means of personal development and positive engagement.
The commissioner expressed confidence that the initiative would help nurture promising athletes and expand opportunities for young people to participate in competitive sports.
Otti’s Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta Attracts Other States’ Interest
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Tertiary Education, Dr Emeka Enyeazu, thanked Otti for approving the programme, describing it as an impactful initiative that had attracted attention beyond Abia State.
Enyeazu disclosed that many institutions had registered for the competition and expressed optimism that the fiesta would generate publicity for the state.
He said the event could further strengthen Abia’s reputation for innovative initiatives in education and sports.
The Abia Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta 2026 forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to encourage youth participation, promote sporting excellence and strengthen unity among students across tertiary institutions.
Government officials attended the flag-off ceremony.
