KANO, Nigeria — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released its final list of candidates for the 2027 Kano State governorship election, with the name of Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the reported governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), missing from the published document.
The list, signed by INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony, contains 17 governorship candidates representing different political parties, but does not include Gwarzo or any candidate under the NDC.
The omission has drawn attention to the NDC’s status in the Kano governorship race, although INEC has not stated in the published list why Gwarzo’s name is absent.
It is therefore unclear whether the omission relates to the party’s nomination process, documentation or another electoral matter.

Why Is Aminu Gwarzo Missing?
Gwarzo, a former deputy governor of Kano State, had emerged as the NDC’s governorship candidate following political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
His absence from INEC’s final list has raised questions about the party’s participation in the contest. However, the published document does not provide an explanation for the omission.
The absence of a candidate’s name from the list alone does not establish the reason for the development. Any conclusion about eligibility, nomination irregularities or documentation would require further evidence or an official explanation.
INEC’s official website has published a dedicated page for the final list of candidates for the Kano State governorship election. View INEC’s official Kano candidates list.
Kano’s 2027 Governorship Contest
The list includes the incumbent governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, as the APC candidate, alongside candidates representing the PDP, ADC, Labour Party and several other political parties.
The omission of the NDC candidate leaves questions about the party’s position in the race, with further clarification from INEC or the party needed to establish the circumstances surrounding Gwarzo’s absence.
