The death of Nigerian gospel singer Olayemi Bayonile Bolaji, popularly known as Toluwanisings, has sparked renewed debate about access to emergency medical care after his personal assistant alleged that efforts to secure treatment took the singer to between seven and eight hospitals in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Toluwanisings, 41, died in the early hours of Wednesday, October 14, 2026, according to a statement issued by his family. His death came less than a day after he performed at a worship event hosted by fellow gospel singer Bidemi Olaoba in Ibadan.
His personal assistant, Babadunni Gbolabo, said the singer suddenly slumped and that those around him attempted to revive him before rushing him to different hospitals in search of medical assistance.
According to reports of Gbolabo’s account, some facilities cited an ongoing doctors’ strike or the unavailability of medical personnel, while others allegedly declined to admit the singer.
The claims have triggered public concern about the availability of emergency treatment and the difficulties patients may face when seeking urgent care.
However, the cause of Toluwanisings’ death has not been publicly disclosed, and the available accounts do not establish whether delays in obtaining medical attention contributed to his death.
UCH Responds to Hospital Visit Allegation
The controversy has drawn attention to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, amid reports that resident doctors were on strike when the singer collapsed.
In a report published by PUNCH on Saturday, October 17, UCH Public Relations Officer Funmilayo Enitan said the hospital had resumed services following the suspension of the resident doctors’ strike.
Enitan also said the hospital management had no official record confirming that Toluwanisings was brought to the facility.
“I was not officially informed that he was brought to UCH. There was no record of it with the management,” she said, according to PUNCH.
The hospital’s response does not independently establish which facilities the singer’s companions visited or what occurred at each location. Those details would require further confirmation from the hospitals concerned and people directly involved.
The Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, also told PUNCH she was unaware of the incident when contacted by the newspaper.
Woli Agba Recalls Singer’s Concerns About Healthcare
Tributes have continued to emerge from members of the gospel music community following the singer’s death.
Comedian and content creator Ayo Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, mourned Toluwanisings and described him as a singer whose distinctive voice had touched lives.
Woli Agba also said the late musician had repeatedly expressed concerns about Nigeria’s healthcare system.
According to the tribute reported by PUNCH, Woli Agba recalled that Toluwanisings had spoken about the possibility of travelling abroad because of concerns about the reliability of medical care in Nigeria.
The recollection has added an emotional dimension to the public discussion surrounding the singer’s final hours, although it does not establish the medical cause of his death.
Doctors’ Strike Raises Questions About Emergency Services
The incident occurred during a period of industrial action involving resident doctors at UCH.
Reports indicate that the hospital’s resident doctors had embarked on a three-day warning strike beginning on October 12, with concerns including electricity and water supply at the institution. The strike was subsequently suspended, and services resumed.
The timing has intensified questions about how hospitals maintain emergency services during industrial disputes.
The allegations surrounding Toluwanisings’ experience also raise questions about coordination between facilities, communication with patients’ families and the availability of alternatives when a hospital cannot provide the required treatment.
However, it is important to distinguish the reported experiences of the singer’s companions from independently established facts. The identities of all the hospitals allegedly visited and their individual explanations have not been fully established in the available reports.
Public Outcry Over Nigeria’s Healthcare System
The singer’s death has prompted reactions from Nigerians concerned about the accessibility and reliability of emergency medical care.
Some commentators have called for improved hospital infrastructure, dependable electricity and water supplies, adequate medical staffing, better emergency response systems and measures to reduce disruptions caused by industrial disputes.
Others have called for greater accountability from government authorities and healthcare institutions when patients encounter difficulties accessing urgent treatment.
The concerns extend beyond the circumstances of one death. In emergencies, delays in reaching an appropriately equipped facility can be critical, making communication, timely assessment and effective referral arrangements important parts of healthcare delivery.
The Nigerian Medical Association has also highlighted the need for stronger emergency medical services and referral systems. As reported by PUNCH, the association said hospitals that lack the personnel or equipment to manage a case should refer patients to facilities better equipped to provide care.
Questions That Still Need Answers
Several issues remain unresolved following Toluwanisings’ death.
These include the precise sequence of events after he collapsed, the hospitals his companions approached, whether emergency assessment or treatment was offered at any of the facilities, and the medical cause of his death.
The accounts made public so far do not establish that the doctors’ strike or any individual hospital caused his death. Establishing that would require reliable medical evidence and a fuller account of the events.
For the singer’s family, friends and fans, the immediate loss is profound. For the wider public, the circumstances described by his aide have raised urgent questions about how people experiencing medical emergencies can obtain timely assistance.
Toluwanisings’ death has therefore become part of a broader conversation about emergency preparedness, healthcare infrastructure and the need to ensure that patients can access appropriate care when every minute matters.
