WHY Abia Youths Trooped Out in Large Numbers for YEIDEP Registration in Umuahia South
Young People Turn Out at Apumiri Ubakala as National Youth Council Mobilises Residents for Economic Empowerment Programme
Registration Involves Participating Banks as Organisers Say Beneficiaries Could Receive Up to ₦1 Million
A large number of youths turned out at the Umuahia South Local Government Headquarters, Apumiri Ubakala, Abia State, on Friday, September 18, 2026, for the ongoing registration exercise under the Youth Economic Intervention and De-Radicalization Programme (YEIDEP).
The exercise, organised with the involvement of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Abia State Chapter, attracted young people seeking to register for the Federal Government-backed youth economic intervention programme.

The turnout reflects the growing interest among young people in programmes offering access to business support, economic opportunities and other forms of youth empowerment.
What Happened at Umuahia South LGA?
The registration exercise took place at the Umuahia South Local Government Headquarters in Apumiri Ubakala following a public notice inviting eligible youths to participate.
The notice stated that registration and account opening would be carried out through participating financial institutions, including Keystone Bank, Access Bank and Signature Bank.
Prospective participants were advised to come with key identification documents, including their National Identification Number (NIN), Bank Verification Number (BVN) and passport photograph.
The notice also indicated that beneficiaries under the YEIDEP intervention could receive between ₦500,000 and ₦1 million, subject to the programme’s guidelines.
However, the notice specifically advised applicants to await further official information concerning the detailed registration procedures and beneficiary selection.
This means that registration should not be interpreted as an automatic guarantee of receiving the stated financial support.
WHY Are Abia Youths Showing Strong Interest?
The strong turnout comes at a time when youth unemployment, entrepreneurship and access to startup capital remain major concerns for young Nigerians.
YEIDEP is designed as a youth economic intervention programme aimed at expanding economic participation and providing opportunities for young people, particularly through entrepreneurship and agro-allied economic activities.
The Federal Ministry of Youth Development’s strategic plan lists YEIDEP among its youth-focused interventions for 2025–2027.
In Abia, the state government recently commenced its own recruitment drive for the programme, with an announced target of registering and onboarding at least one million young people across the state. The state government said the registration process would involve selected banks serving as registration partners.
The development has subsequently generated interest among youths across different communities.
NYCN Mobilises Youths for the Programme
The National Youth Council of Nigeria, Abia State Chapter, used the public notice to invite eligible young people to participate in the exercise at the Umuahia South council headquarters.
The council’s involvement comes amid renewed youth-development activities in the state.
The Abia State chapter of NYCN recently resumed full activities after resolving internal challenges, with its leadership saying the organisation would focus on youth development, responsible leadership and greater engagement with young people across the state.
The council has also been involved in youth-related activities alongside government agencies and other youth organisations in Abia.
What Applicants Need to Know About the YEIDEP Registration
For youths interested in the programme, the public notice displayed at the Umuahia South exercise highlighted three major identification requirements:
NIN
BVN
Passport photograph
The notice also identified participating banks through which registration and account opening would take place.
Importantly, prospective beneficiaries are expected to follow the official registration process and comply with the programme’s eligibility requirements.
The ₦500,000 to ₦1 million figure displayed on the notice is presented as an expected range for qualified beneficiaries and is subject to the programme’s guidelines. It should therefore not be interpreted as an automatic payment to everyone who registers.
Abia Government Targets One Million Youth Registrations
The Umuahia South exercise forms part of a broader YEIDEP recruitment drive already launched in Abia State.
According to the Abia State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, the state formally flagged off its YEIDEP recruitment drive in September and set a target of registering at least one million young people.
The state said the exercise was being implemented with the participation of financial institutions and other stakeholders involved in the registration process.
The development makes the current registration exercise significant for youths across the state’s 17 local government areas, particularly those seeking opportunities to establish or expand businesses.
What Happens After Registration?
While many youths have already shown interest by turning out for the registration exercise, the next stage will depend on the official procedures and beneficiary-selection framework of the programme.
The notice issued by the NYCN specifically advised participants to await additional information on registration procedures and beneficiary selection.
Therefore, youths should be cautious of individuals demanding unofficial payments or promising guaranteed access to the stated financial support.
As the YEIDEP registration continues across Abia, attention will now turn to how the registration process is conducted, how beneficiaries are selected and when successful applicants will begin receiving the support provided under the programme.
For the youths who came out in large numbers at Umuahia South on Friday, however, the message was clear: there is significant interest among young people in opportunities that could help them start, sustain or expand economic ventures.
